If you are an Indian student planning for 2027, Italy should not automatically replace India — and India should not automatically be your only option. The smarter approach is to compare your best realistic Indian option with your best realistic Italian option before you commit money, a branch, or a year of your life.
This guide is built from official Italian government, Italian university, Italian consular and Indian government sources. It is written so that you can understand the process and do it yourself. You do not need to pay a consultancy simply to access university portals, Universitaly, scholarship calls or visa information.
Study in Italy 2027: Key Facts at a Glance
| Question | Current Official Position |
|---|---|
| 2027/28 national procedure | Already published and valid for 2027/28. |
| Universitaly | Official free MUR portal for visa-related pre-enrolment. |
| General 2027/28 visa deadline | 31 October 2027 for Laurea, Laurea Magistrale and ordinary single-cycle degree programmes; university deadlines may be earlier. |
| Bachelor’s degree in Italy | Usually a 3-year Laurea, 180 CFU/ECTS. |
| Master’s degree | Usually a 2-year Laurea Magistrale, 120 CFU/ECTS. |

CONFIRMED NOW: Universitaly pre-enrolment framework, national 2027/28 procedure and 31 October 2027 general visa deadline.
WAIT FOR OFFICIAL 2027/28 CALLS: Exact university application windows, 2027 tuition tables, admission tests, seat numbers, programme availability and 2027 regional scholarship deadlines/amounts.
Whenever this article uses a 2026/27 university figure, it is labelled as an example — not a promise for 2027.
1. Should you study in Italy or stay in India?
Start with the course, not the country. If you secure a strong Indian university, get the branch or subject you actually want, and the financial equation makes sense for your family, staying in India can be an excellent decision.
Italy becomes particularly worth comparing when your realistic Indian alternative is expensive, does not offer the branch you want, or does not match your academic or international career goals. The purpose is not to “escape India”; it is to create a second credible option before deadlines and deposits start forcing rushed decisions.
A useful Engineering example: NTA reported that 15,38,468 unique candidates appeared for JEE Main 2026 B.E./B.Tech. Paper 1 across the two sessions. That number does not mean everyone outside a government seat has failed. It shows why a capable student should build alternatives before one exam result becomes the only plan.
2. First understand the Italian degree system
Italian degree names can confuse Indian students because they do not map perfectly to familiar labels such as BBA, B.Tech, M.Tech or MBA. MUR describes the normal university structure as a first-cycle Laurea and a second-cycle Laurea Magistrale, with single-cycle degrees for certain regulated fields.
- Laurea (Bachelor’s level): normally 3 years and 180 CFU/ECTS.
- Laurea Magistrale (Master’s level): normally 2 years and 120 CFU/ECTS after a suitable first-cycle degree.
- Single-cycle Laurea Magistrale: integrates the two cycles and may last 5 or 6 years, depending on the profession.
- Master universitario: a separate postgraduate qualification offered by universities; do not assume it is the same as a 2-year Laurea Magistrale simply because the English page says “Master”.
For Indian applicants, the practical lesson is simple: check the exact qualification type, duration, credits, admission requirement and final award before comparing it with an Indian degree.
3. Bachelor’s in Italy after Class 12
Yes, Indian students can apply for first-cycle programmes in Italy after school, provided their qualification meets the university and national requirements. The exact application process is university-specific.
Do not assume every Bachelor’s programme is taught in English. English-taught options exist, but the selection is narrower at Bachelor’s level than at Master’s level in many universities.
- University of Bologna — Economics and Finance (2026/27 example): 3 years, 180 ECTS, taught in English, restricted access.
- Ca’ Foscari University of Venice — Economics and Business: 3 years, 180 credits, taught in English, limited admission.
- Politecnico di Milano — Industrial Engineering (2026/27 example): 3-year Laurea programme in English at the Piacenza campus.
These are examples to show that English-taught public-university options are real. They are not a fixed 2027 list. Always use the 2027/28 course catalogue and admission call before applying.
4. “BBA in Italy”: what should an Indian student actually search?
If you type only “BBA in Italy”, you can miss relevant degrees because Italian universities may use programme names such as Economics and Business, Economics and Finance, Business Administration, Management or related titles. For Bachelor’s-level research, search the subject — Business, Economics, Finance, Management — and then confirm that the page says first-cycle/Bachelor’s/Laurea.
Before shortlisting, compare the curriculum. A programme called Economics and Finance can be more quantitative than a typical Indian BBA. A Business programme may include economics, law and quantitative methods. Choose the curriculum you want, not the acronym you are familiar with.
5. Engineering in Italy after Class 12
Italy can be a strong alternative for Engineering, but the decision must be programme-specific. At Bachelor’s level, verify the language of instruction carefully and do not assume that every Engineering programme at a well-known technical university is available in English.
Compare your Italian option against your actual Indian option on: branch, curriculum, laboratories, internship access, total cost, language, career destination and the university/department — not only a global ranking screenshot.
6. Computer Science, Data and technology programmes
For CS/Data/AI-related study, programme names and entry routes vary widely. At Bachelor’s level, check whether the programme itself is in English. At Master’s level, check the curricular prerequisites: universities may evaluate whether your Bachelor’s contained enough credits in mathematics, computer science, engineering or related subjects.
Do not rely on percentage alone. A high overall score does not automatically replace programme-specific academic requirements.
7. Master’s in Italy for Indian graduates
For many Indian graduates, Italy becomes especially attractive at Master’s level because the range of English-taught specialised programmes is broader. However, admission is not controlled by one national percentage cut-off.
Universities can assess: your Bachelor’s degree, relevance of the discipline, transcript and subject credits, grades, language evidence, CV, motivation, portfolio or other programme-specific requirements.
Sapienza’s 2026/27 international-admissions guidance, for example, states that Master’s applicants need at least a three-year Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant discipline, while the exact programme still controls its own requirements.
For 2027, open the exact programme page and call. Never use a consultant’s generic statement such as “60% is enough for Italy” as your admission rule.
8. Management Master’s vs MBA in Italy
Do not treat every programme containing the word “Master” as an MBA. A two-year Laurea Magistrale in Management/Economics/Finance and a university Professional Master/MBA can have very different academic structures, admissions criteria and fees.
The fee difference can be dramatic. As a 2026/27 example, the University of Bologna Global MBA Professional Master lists an enrolment fee of €35,000. That is why “Italy is cheap” is not a useful sentence until you name the exact programme.
Before choosing an MBA or management programme, compare: qualification type, duration, work-experience requirement, curriculum, alumni/network, career geography, total fee, living cost and post-study plan.
9. What about Medicine / MBBS in Italy?
Medicine needs a separate decision framework and should not be mixed into a general Bachelor’s/Master’s guide. Italy has six-year single-cycle Medicine and Surgery programmes, including English-taught options, but Indian students must separately verify the annual Italian admission rules and the applicable National Medical Commission requirements for practising in India.
For that reason, use KALINGAEURO’s dedicated MBBS in Italy / IMAT guide for Medicine rather than applying the general rules in this article.
10. How much does studying in Italy cost?
There is no single tuition fee for Italy. Public universities use different fee models, and the exact amount can depend on the university, programme, nationality/residence category, financial documentation and exemptions.
- University of Padua: its student-fee page says degree-programme enrolment ranges from €0 to approximately €3,000 per year. Its 2026/27 call lists fixed all-inclusive fees for non-EU students with households outside Italy of €2,790 for Group A and €2,990 for Group B, before the regional fee/stamp duty structure stated in the call.
- Sapienza University of Rome: its 2026/27 international-admissions page lists €300–€1,500 per year for many Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes according to country of residence.
- Politecnico di Milano: for a standard 46–74 ECTS plan, the 2026/27 fee page shows the all-inclusive contribution increasing with financial status up to a maximum annual amount stated by the university.
- University of Bologna Global MBA: €35,000 enrolment fee for the 2026/27 Professional Master example.
The correct question is not “How much is Italy?” It is: “What is the official 2027 tuition rule for my exact programme and my student category?”
11. Scholarships in Italy: opportunity, not guaranteed income
Italy has more than one scholarship model. Indian students may encounter regional right-to-study benefits, university merit awards, tuition waivers and other programme-specific opportunities.
Regional right-to-study benefits are normally governed by annual public calls. The relevant regional authority can set economic, asset, merit, document, accommodation and deadline rules. The Ministry of University and Research also publishes national right-to-study framework measures and annual parameters.
As a merit example, Padua announced up to 69 International Excellence Scholarships for 2026/27, with €8,000 per year plus a tuition-fee waiver for selected candidates admitted to English-taught curricula.
That does NOT mean every international student receives €8,000.
Regional scholarship authorities students commonly encounter:
- Piemonte/Turin: EDISU Piemonte.
- Pavia: EDiSU Pavia.
- Emilia-Romagna/Bologna and other campuses: ER.GO.
- Lazio/Rome: DiSCo Lazio.
- Tuscany: DSU Toscana.
- Marche: ERDIS Marche.
- Veneto: regional/university-linked right-to-study bodies such as ESU depending on institution/location.
- Campania/Naples: ADISURC.
- Sicily: ERSU bodies/calls by territory.
The 2027/28 calls will decide the real deadlines, amounts and document rules. Do not copy a 2026 scholarship deadline into a 2027 application plan.
12. Living cost: low tuition does not mean free living
Accommodation is often the largest monthly expense. Official university examples show why city choice matters:
- Padua: the university currently gives an indicative single-room range of €300–€600 per month plus expenses and approximately €60 per week for supermarket groceries.
- Bologna: the university currently gives an average of about €400/month plus utilities for a single room in a shared apartment and approximately €60/week for supermarket groceries.
These are examples, not personal budgets. Your actual cost depends on city, housing type, lifestyle, deposits, travel, insurance/health arrangements and initial setup.
13. Can international students work part-time in Italy?
Yes — under the current official rule, a study residence permit allows part-time work for up to 20 hours per week and 1,040 hours per year. But legal permission to work is not a job guarantee.
Do not build the entire education budget around income you have not earned yet. Language, local demand, class schedule, city and your own employability all matter.
14. Do you need Italian if the degree is in English?
You may be able to study completely in English and still benefit greatly from learning Italian. Italian can improve daily life, networking, internships and access to local employment. For many students, ignoring the local language until graduation is a strategic mistake.
15. Is an Italian degree valid in India?
For Engineering, Business, Economics, Management and other general academic degrees, do not reduce the answer to “yes, automatically” or “no”. India now has the UGC 2025 framework for recognition and grant of equivalence to qualifications obtained from foreign educational institutions.
Where formal equivalence is required, the UGC process evaluates the foreign qualification against its rules. The UGC FAQ states that an equivalence certificate is valid for academic institutions and public/private employment in India where a UGC-recognised qualification is required.
Professional qualifications are different. The UGC Regulations explicitly exclude disciplines such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Law and Architecture from this general equivalence mechanism because the relevant statutory councils regulate them.
16. Study in Italy 2027 application roadmap for Indian students
There is no single “Italy application form”. The correct sequence is built around the university you choose and whether you need a visa:
- Choose the course first: Decide the subject and level before choosing a city or university.
- Build a shortlist from official university pages: Confirm language, qualification type, curriculum and 2027/28 intake status.
- Check the exact admission call: Look for academic requirements, test/interview/portfolio requirements, language evidence, seat limits, application fee and deadlines.
- Prepare documents: Typical university applications can require passport, school/degree certificate, transcript, language evidence and programme-specific documents. Use the exact official call — not a generic checklist.
- Apply to the university within its own deadline.
- After admission/pre-acceptance, complete the required Universitaly pre-enrolment: Essential for visa purposes if you are a non-EU student resident abroad who needs a study visa.
- Prepare the study-visa application: Follow your competent Italian Embassy/Consulate and its current jurisdiction-specific checklist.
- Apply separately for scholarships/right-to-study benefits: Scholarship deadlines can run independently of admission and visa timelines.
- Secure accommodation and complete enrolment steps: Carry out all final procedures required by the university.
- After arrival on a national D study visa: Apply for the study residence permit within the official time limit.
17. Universitaly and the 2027 visa deadline — what is already confirmed?
The national procedure for international students is already valid for both 2026/27 and 2027/28. For 2027/28, the general deadline for submitting study-visa applications for ordinary Laurea, Laurea Magistrale and ordinary single-cycle degree programmes is 31 October 2027.
This is not your university application deadline. Universities may set earlier dates based on the course and the start of teaching. Your university could require Universitaly/visa action well before 31 October.
The same procedure states that the Universitaly pre-enrolment application for visa applicants is submitted through Universitaly, the Ministry’s official free portal. University validation or pre-enrolment does not guarantee a visa: the final visa decision belongs to the competent Italian diplomatic-consular authority.
18. Do you need a Declaration of Value (DoV) or CIMEA?
Do not assume one document is mandatory for every student and every university. The university and the competent diplomatic-consular authority determine what is required for your case under the applicable procedure.
The current Universitaly procedure recognises routes involving CIMEA comparability/verification or Declaration of Value for specified purposes. The Consulate General of Italy in Mumbai also tells students to request a DoV when the higher-education institution requires it.
Follow the exact university communication and your consular checklist. Do not buy a DoV/CIMEA service simply because another student needed one.
19. Indian students: the visa process is jurisdiction-specific
Italian consular offices in India publish their own operational instructions and jurisdiction information. The current Mumbai Consulate study page summarises the sequence as: apply to the higher-education institution → complete Universitaly pre-enrolment once admitted → apply for the appropriate study visa.
For 2027, always use the page of the Embassy/Consulate that has jurisdiction over your legal residence. Do not copy a checklist from another jurisdiction or an old academic year without checking whether it is still current.
20. What happens after you arrive in Italy?
For students entering Italy on a national D visa for university enrolment, the official 2026/27–2027/28 procedure says the study residence-permit request must be submitted within eight working days of arrival. The procedure is handled under the Ministry of the Interior system and typically starts through the designated postal kit or available institutional support points.
Residence-permit renewal later depends on continuing to meet the required conditions, including academic progress rules.
21. Can you stay and work in Italy after graduation?
Italy provides legal routes for qualifying graduates to move from study status toward work or job-search status, but this is not a guaranteed job or guaranteed permanent residence. The Italian Ministry of Labour’s integration portal explains that conversion from study/training permits to work is no longer tied to annual quota availability, provided the legal requirements are met and the permit is valid.
For qualifying graduates, the official portal also describes a job-search/business-start permit lasting at least nine and up to twelve months, subject to the applicable conditions.
Your real employability still depends on field, skills, internships, language, network and labour-market demand.
22. Who should NOT choose Italy?
- You already have a strong Indian offer in the course/branch you want, at a cost that makes sense, and your career target is strongly India-focused.
- Your family can afford Italy only if you assume a scholarship, immediate part-time work and zero unexpected expenses.
- You chose Italy only because someone said “Europe is free”.
- You have not checked the exact programme language, qualification type or curriculum.
- Your profession requires licensing/recognition in India and you have not verified the regulator’s rules.
- You are not prepared to manage documents, deadlines and independent living abroad.
23. Who should seriously consider Italy?
- You found a public-university programme that genuinely fits your academic goal.
- Your Indian alternative is much more expensive or forces an unwanted branch/course compromise.
- Your family can support a realistic budget before scholarship assumptions.
- You value international academic exposure and may want to build part of your career in Europe.
- You are willing to adapt, learn the local language and manage an international student process responsibly.
- You have checked recognition/licensing for the career you want.
24. Do-it-yourself checklist: you can complete the process yourself
You do not need a consultancy to access the official process. Use this checklist and keep every step tied to an official source:
- Open the official university course page and download/save the 2027/28 admission call when published.
- Confirm the degree level, language, curriculum, eligibility, test requirements, application window and tuition rule.
- Apply only through the university’s official application system.
- Save your admission/pre-acceptance documents and read every condition attached to them.
- Use Universitaly for the visa-related pre-enrolment procedure when applicable.
- Read the competent Italian Embassy/Consulate study-visa page and current checklist for your jurisdiction.
- Check scholarship calls separately and apply within their own deadlines — even when admission/visa is still pending if the call allows it.
- Keep PDF copies of every submitted form, receipt, application confirmation and ranking result.
- Recheck the university/Universitaly/consulate pages before each irreversible payment or deadline.
- After arrival, complete the residence-permit process within the official time limit.
25. Download Official Documents — verify everything yourself

26. Frequently asked questions — Study in Italy 2027
No. Public-university tuition can be relatively low and scholarships/waivers exist, but there is no universal “free education” rule. Check the exact university’s 2027/28 fee page and scholarship call.
Yes, if you meet the admission requirements for a first-cycle programme. Check the exact 2027/28 programme, language, school-qualification rules and any test requirements.
You may not always see the Indian acronym “BBA”. Search Bachelor’s-level programmes in Business, Economics, Finance, Management and related fields, then confirm that the qualification is a first-cycle/Bachelor’s/Laurea.
Yes, English-taught Engineering Bachelor’s options exist, but availability is university- and programme-specific. Verify the exact 2027 course catalogue.
A Laurea Magistrale is normally two years/120 CFU. A university Master/Professional Master is a different type of qualification and may follow a different duration and fee model.
Not necessarily. The official 2026/27 Bologna Global MBA example costs €35,000. Always check the exact programme.
Under the current rule, a study residence permit allows part-time work up to 20 hours per week and 1,040 hours per year. This is permission to work, not a guaranteed job.
It varies by city. Current university examples include roughly €300–€600 plus expenses for a single room in Padua and about €400 plus utilities for a single room in Bologna. Use current local information before budgeting.
No. Scholarship eligibility and final benefit depend on the relevant annual call, economic/merit/document requirements, rankings and sometimes available funding.
For general foreign academic qualifications, UGC’s equivalence framework applies where formal equivalence is required. Regulated professional qualifications such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Law and Architecture follow their respective Indian statutory regulators.
Universitaly is the official free Ministry portal used for the pre-enrolment procedure for visa-requiring international students in the applicable higher-education routes.
The national procedure sets 31 October 2027 as the general deadline for ordinary degree-programme visa applications for 2027/28. Universities can require earlier action.
No. The Italian diplomatic-consular authority makes the final visa decision independently.
No universal answer. Follow the exact university and competent Italian consular instructions for your case. A university may require DoV or other recognition/verification documentation (such as CIMEA).
There are legal routes to convert study status to work and, for qualifying graduates, a job-search route. They are subject to legal conditions and do not guarantee employment.
No. You can apply yourself using the official university, Universitaly, scholarship and consular portals. KALINGAEURO is useful if you want help comparing universities, managing timelines, avoiding document/deadline errors, and coordinating admission, scholarship, visa and arrival.
